The subtlety of its storytelling is remarkable, as you grow up unpacking rooms from your childhood, university, a brief, failed relationship, and much more. Never has emptying boxes been so nuanced. Never in a million years would I have expected to say “I'm sick of this game–time for a bit of unpacking.” And yet Unpacking really transforms an unpleasant chore into an insanely therapeutic and surprisingly beautiful experience. 4) Unpacking Platforms: Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, Mac, Linux RRP: $19.99 It may only take five hours to complete, but it’s worth every second. Real-life husband-and-wife duo Bryce Dallas Howard and Seth Gabel add a whole new level of gripping drama to proceedings, even if the script occasionally wears a tad thin. Landing day one on PS Plus, Graceful Decay’s mind-bending Maquette certainly took a backseat to fellow freebie Final Fantasy VII Remake, but deserves more attention than its famed counterpart.Įssentially a first-person puzzle game where the environment nests within itself like Russian matryoshka dolls, Maquette follows in the footsteps of 2020’s Superliminal to deliver a story-heavy tale through the manipulation of size and scale. 6) Maquette Platforms: PS4, PS5, PC RRP: $19.99

Omno gives you a beautiful and serene world, filled with nature and intrigue, with a surprisingly deep and emotional story, plus puzzles that complement but never interrupt its narrative. Jonas MankeĬhanneling third-person exploration elements of RiME and Journey, but with smaller stages, clever riddles, and a completionist vibe, few games in 2021 are quite as dreamy and delightful. 7) Omno Platforms: Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, PC RRP: $18.99Īs the second game in this list that starts and ends with the letter O and created by a lone dev, Omno is the vision of Jonas Manke–a real talent and the head of Studio Inkyfox in Bielefeld, Germany, who managed to deliver his fantasy after a successful and surprisingly modest Kickstarter campaign the story of its development is as impressive as the game itself. It’s not as fluid as flow-based predecessors, most notably Bound, but the gorgeous and fascinating world, tight combat, and overwhelming boss battles help it carve a very individual niche, scratching an understandable itch for those who love to feel challenged yet relaxed at the same time. This second Annapurna-published title puts you in the swift shoes of Rei, a Voidrunner who effortlessly skates around impossible landscapes to destroy evil creatures to save her planet. SPECTRUM48, follows in the footsteps of Andrew “Repixel8” Jeffreys, who singlehandedly delivered last year’s superb Formula Retro Racing. What’s all the more impressive is that it’s a one-man effort: Philip Sinclair, A.K.A. 'OCO' is the most overlooked indie of 2021.
